Japara signage

Designing a national signage system

SITUATION
Japara has over 55 care homes and villages thought Australia, yet their brand presence is low in these locations. Because wide scale signage projects involve many logistical challenges, rollout is often time consuming and costly. As a result, many homes and villages still retain the outdated branding and wayfinding that is not always consistent or coherent.

CHALLENGE
Our challenge was not only to help people navigate their homes, but also elevate their experience of Japara’s brand. To increase this challenge, the project kicked off just prior to rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant that access to homes was sometimes limited.

SOLUTION
Create a cost-effective, easy to interpret, highly functional and elegant design system that could be applied across 56 homes around Australia.

RESULT
Rigorous production management means that the pilot site is now complete, with multiple sites underway. Visitors to the pilot home report greater ease in getting around, while staff and residents feel a stronger sense of identity and connection to the home. A signage style guide has also been produced to assist Japara’s development team on new projects.
